It was okay but no series is without at least a couple mediocre episodes. I thought it was interesting. I don't even need to explain this one, just go watch the episodes "Jet" and "The Fortunteller". He was even far more interesting when he returned in Book 2 and in my opinion this whole brainwashing plot with him was great and very emotional, as was his death scene. All of those kids came from different earth kingdom villages the fire nation wiped out. If you have siblings you know that they always bully each other. Just because someone shows moments of these negative features doesn't mean you can attribute said negative features to someone's core character. I think Katara made the right choice, but I understand actual women like a bit of danger (or at least the fantasy thereof). Thanks, Sokka. I'd say these flaws make her realistic. The others didn't punish each other the only one who usually scolded them was Katara. The plot bends over backwards to give Katara her moments, even when they don't feel deserving. Aang is a great character, but he's somewhat lacking in the sex appeal. They travel to Lake Laogai in the hopes of finding Appa. Because people at the start hated him so now everyone else does. Jet is straight, the cabbage man is bi, Bumi is unlabeled, and Yue is bi. In the second gif, Katara and Jet look down at Jetâs hideout. Like in the episode "The Blind Bandit", her response to two silly teenagers not answering their question was to violently assualt them with water bending and interrogate them. The traits of the character that ended up happening: Insecure, cruel, bully, gullible, self righteous, hypocritical and egotistical. I apologize for my first post to this sub being something negative towards the show, but please hear me out. THIS IS ⦠Whether theyâre funny, creepy, sympathetic, or just plain strange, this show had a lot of people to work with. So besides his death, there are no other scenes where he's blatantly sympathetic. Too many cliche things going on. below it is a cluster of five off-white stars. What's unacceptable is you didn't ask if I wanted in and I ⦠I don't know why anyone would call it one of the worst episodes; it's easily one of the best. And his sword fight scene with Zuko is epic. He's a tragic character that struggles to escape his anger, and fails. Katara went out of her way to assasinate a sad old man, simply because he followed the orders he recieved from the oppressive regime he was living under. Finally having had enough of the rules of the city, the group decides to go against the law to find Appa. Instead, they encounter Long Feng, who mortally wounds Jet. Eh. New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast, More posts from the TheLastAirbender community. Katara's behavior in the episode "The Painted Lady" was a good example of this. The whole Southern Raiders and The Watertribe Scroll episodes are there to show us she isn't a perfect character and is a flawed and often selfish one. Edit 2: So what I've picked up from the comments so far is that, her being an insufferable, annoying teenager just makes her a more complicated and realistic character. Elsewhere, Zuko finds Appa and discovers that Aang is in the city. Avatar: The Last Airbender is a treasured animation with a dedicated fanbase that loved following the journey of Aang, Katara, Sokka, and the rest of Team Avatar. Her harsh outburst was not what you would expect from the "moral compass" character they made her out to be. The teenager thing was meant to come off comical but I can understand why you didn't like it. If Katara was flawless, Mary Sue, perfect character who never deviated from her kind, caring, strong, compassionate and ethical label, then we would see many more complaints about that as well. It was clichéd that Katara automatically has a crush on Jet and trusts him over Sokka. I don’t think that making her such a powerful bender was necessary then, since it would’ve been fine to constantly see her grow stronger throughout the rest of the show (although, I guess she kinda does). Katara spent three weeks by Aang's bedside, caring for him, waiting for him to come out of a coma. Teenagers aren't perfect. As for Zuko... he betrayed Katara in the worst possible way after she showed him kindness, and his decision to join Azula nearly got Aang KILLED. Sokka is her brother. Spawning several comics, a sequel series, and a questionable live-action movie, the series is a staple of animated television. I haven’t really thought about it that often, but we really don’t see her train that much before basically being called a master. It is a time of big change (ginormous in Kataraâs life, with the war going on) and the start to finding out who you are. Press question mark to learn the rest of the keyboard shortcuts. Katara went out of her way to assasinate a sad old man, simply because he followed the orders he recieved from the oppressive regime he was living under. This would be fine if she wasn't so much of a toxic person at other times. Cookies help us deliver our Services. Obviously, this is unacceptable. above it is the word âgaslightâ in white font and all caps with sparkles on it. was not disappointed. Why does anyone like her?! As they do so, the gang meets Jet again. Jet and the Freedom Fighters are just another facet of the show, another part of all of the detail, and honestly following their story could be a show in its own right. Aang was holding back because he is a pacifist and saw Jet as a friend a few seconds ago. That's what makes their relationships real and relatable. She isn't a happy-go-lucky, hunky-dory person; her past is chock-full of pain and suffering. Looks like you're using new Reddit on an old browser. The episode is often called one of the worst episodes of Avatar (i know that the "bad" Avatar episodes are still great compared to other series but still) and people seem to dislike the character too from what I am reading online. Throughout the entire show, Katara was always the character who would take every opportunity to make fun of other characters at their expense, especially characters like Sokka. When Zuko was at his very most insecure and fragile state because he had changed his entire outlook on life, Katara was the one to take advantage of his weakness, by threatening to kill him and curelly making fun of his lack of bending. I love discussing stuff like this and see the views of others. Which is shown by Katara going out to kill someone out of revenge for example. The reason I couldn't stand these negative traits in Katara, is because she never seemed to suffer any consequences for her toxic behavior. I still do. Well go ahead and begin, or it seems like you're just reflexively dismissing my post without much thought. The others have a more care-free attitude about these things than she does. I can see why people dislike Jet as a character though; he's an extremist, he beat and robbed a harmless old man, he tried to murder an entire village, and he manipulated and used Katara to his own ends. 909k Fans Book One: Water is the first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender, an American animated television series produced by Nickelodeon Studios.Created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the first season premiered on Nickelodeon on February 21, 2005. All gifs are titled, âAvatar the Last Airbenderâ, and âJetâ. The only thing I don’t like about Katara is that she became a master wayyyyyyyyyy too quickly. The world building of the episode was the best part. Its just those around her (especially Aang that see her as perfect) we the viewers know otherwise. Katara lives by a strict code and even though it's one I don't always agree with, I respect her for having one. Avatars world building is amazing and dedicating season 1 to a new location most episodes was the perfect way to do so. She was just making sure she and Zuko wouldn't make the same mistakes when she threatened Zuko. Katara isn't always optimistic. She wasn't going to scold herself was she? And please list why it’s a bad post I dare you. I don't like that nearly every side characters backstory in the show is "a firebender killed my friend/parent/sibling." I love that episode actually. Heâs kinda a jerk. The first few times though I thought it was bad episode. In the first gif, Jet lands on two soldiers, and runs up to other soldiers and pulls out his hooks. I think it was a good episode for Sokka too because it shows him being a good leader who trusts his instincts and isn't afraid to call someone out. 2 she had a crush on jet first Kataang shippers tend to consider the start of the relationship to be the moment Aang saw Katara. I'll never forget watching the episode "Lake Laogai" for the first time and being dumfounded from Katara's random, unpromted disrespect for the janitor sweeping up the hair. I think the episode is great, even though Jet has taken his revenge too far. This episode also gives us a couple neat & quirky characters like Smellerbee and Longshot and The Duke and Pipsqueak, all of whom reappear in later episodes. Maybe teaches us not to judge a book by its cover, but by its actions - since it seems like both Aang and Katara are overcome by their first impression of Jet and find it difficult to believe he could do wrong, even though they only just met the day before. For example, I can be in a foul mood one day and be an ass to someone. And the show didnt want to depict her as perfect. The episode is not without it's flaws but I liked Jet, he served as an example of how not everyone who's against the Fire Nation is automatically good. (what a nice person, right?). Just a little FYI. Sheep mentality. Their adventure across the four elemental nations has inspired and fascinated fans across the world. I mean both, the episode and the character. It got old real quick but was good enough for jet because at least with the flashback we knew it was the leader we've seen from the rough riders. As for the Janitor, thank you no one ever mentions this. Katara, Jet, and Haru are Indie Artists, they can be found performing at Route 505 bar every night. The stakes are raised when Zuko's charismatic little sister, Azula, arrives & stirs up chaos and violence at every turn. Everything I didn't like about Katara more or less had to do with the dissonance between what the writers meant for her to be, and the character she actually was. They find Smellerbee and Longshot and realize Jet was brainwashed by the Dai Li. A combination of Katara's insecurity and insufferable self rightousness was on clear display when Toph was getting acclimated to the group. He’s kinda a jerk. She often bullied people to get what she wanted. This was after she alienated and didn't trust her own brother's word over a manipulative cult leader. Sure, the "kids fighting adults" theme was a bit cheap and unrealistic but i think Jets flawed morals definitely were one of the more interesting and especially more realistic characteristics in Book 1. However, if she was really most concerned about the villagers, she would realize that there are dozens of villages just like it that need to be saved. Bottom line is, just because someone shows a negative trait a few moments in their life doesn't mean you can give them that negative label. She lied to the rest of the group and poisoned Appa (such a wonderful person, right?) As for Katara's anger towards her father, she is a child of war. The plot bends over backwards to give Katara her moments, even when they don't feel deserving. Also, she didn’t poison Appa. The primary reason I think Katara isn't a good character is because there seams to be a stark difference between the character they meant for her to be, and the one she ended up being. Keep it up! If they wanted to make Katara perfect, why would they let her do those things? New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast, More posts from the TheLastAirbender community. It seems like your just close minded and didn’t think at all about what he seemed to actually mean maybe if you could look more into you could learn something. This sub-reddit really helped me a lot back when I was applying all the way to now where I await my departure, which, statistically speaking, has a more than probable chance of getting delayed again lol. By using our Services or clicking I agree, you agree to our use of cookies. Katara's ex-boyfriend, Jet, takes a sudden and intense disliking to the quiet new kid, Zuko, who's mysterious past fascinates Sokka to no end. I actually thought is was pretty interesting to see a tortfeasor who is not from the Fire Nation. But the other 364 days I'm nice as can be. And she never got any karma for her toxic behavior in the plot. This is such a stupid post I don't know where to begin. And their sidequest episode did drive home that Katara has a ⦠I'm sure if he hadn't been killed he could've redeemed himself too. there are four screencaps on the edit. Like in the episode "Jet", they make Aang hilariously underpowered briefly so he can't defeat Jet, just so Katara can defeat him. Just like how I enjoyed seeing Azula's humanity, I enjoy seeing the dark side of Jet. When in reality he is actually a realistic character. As a kid I always loved that episode. Not really a flaw in writing but a flaw in the character - actually something I think makes the character feel more realistic and better as a whole. Katara: It has come to my attention that the three of you have a secret betting pool on how many times Toph will insult Aang in a given training session. Like in the episode "Jet", they make Aang hilariously underpowered briefly so he can't defeat Jet, just so Katara can defeat him. Almost everyone on this show has been selfish and done things to hurt the others in a variety of ways. And I think that is what you are doing here. Maybe teaches us not to judge a book by its cover, but by its actions - since it seems like both Aang and Katara are overcome by their first impression of Jet and find it difficult to believe he could do wrong, even though they only just met the day before. The other member's of the group kept treating her like she was a kind and compassionate person, even when she was not. But then it grows on you because it introduces us to the reality how the fire nation is leaving people stranded with no homes to go to. Browse the user profile and get inspired. Yeah, people who kindly express their opinion about a fictional character are stupid now because it's not the same as yours. From that day on, he would despise the Fire Nation and he dedicated his life to stopping them in any way he could, even at the cost of innocent lives.Over the years, Jet formed a ragtag group of young Earth Kingdom refugees who had been displaced by the Fire Nation and called them the Freedom Fighters. Be warned, the handwritten notes are in cursive and my handwriting isn't the best lol. the first image in the top left corner is of Jet yelling angrily at Sokka, during the scene where Sokka tries to give mercy to an old man. În âJetâ, Aang, Katara Èi Sokka îÈi testeazÄ prietenia printr-un lider rebel carismatic care luptÄ împotriva naÈiunii focului. By the end of the show, and even with LOK out, fans regard her as the best Waterbender ever. But Katara has the strength and the will to keep going, even in extremely hopeless situations. I can agree with this, but then why do people like her so much? Katara naturally is very curious to know her future, particularly who she is going to marry. Simply human nature. Clearly not, you just pointed out her flaws. The "Sokka's instincts" part is fucking hilarious too. This episode also shows us how easily we as people can be deceived by others we think are honest and good.
